“I’m right! No you’re not!”

Today’s newsletter is about conflict, conflict with others and also more importantly within ourselves.

Now I’m no stranger in life to conflict and I am guilty of occasionally seeking it out, because for me it brings a resolution to a problem. Not always the one I want long term so I’ve changed the way I’ve perceived and dealt with this, in order to allow me greater flexibility in my life and utilise my time more effectively.

Initially I used to believe that what I thought was right and that the person I was in debate with was wrong, but I’ve realised that this is simply not true. More often than not both sides are right.

How can two sides be right?

Our views, beliefs and values are driven by our emotional experiences in life and those of the people who influence in our early formative years.

Initially we take on the views, values and beliefs of our parents or guardians until we challenge them and form different ones, but we can only do this if we are open to the possibility that with greater knowledge comes greater understanding.

As a therapist and coach, if a client tells me water scares them (I love water), then that is their reality and only if they want to change this, will I help them do this by challenging their beliefs with a number of tools.

So the next time someone says “I think you’re being unfair!” instead of saying something like “Oh don’t be so stupid/daft/ridiculous!” (which is surprisingly common), acknowledge the way they feel by paraphrasing their words back to them in a non- patronising and empathetic way, such as “I accept you think I’m being unfair…AND…(your opinion)”.

Notice I use the word “AND” instead of “BUT”!

If you use the word but you negate all of the sentiment you started the sentence with and will leave the person feeling unheard or misunderstood.

Now let’s take this a step further and use this with ourselves as I’m a big fan of acknowledging our weaknesses as this helps us grow stronger.

Whenever you hear that part of you that says “I’m nervous/scared/worried”, acknowledge it and ask it to help, so you could say “I accept you are nervous/scared/worried…AND I want you to know that we’ve done this before, we’ll be fine.”

You’ll notice the word I use here is “We” because our personality is represented as the sum of the different parts, if this seems a bit whacky to you just use the word “I”.

If you want to come and practise some of these techniques and learn how to build your own inner confidence pop down to our Personal Development Group this Saturday details below.

Personal Development Group – “Confidence Building”

These are techniques I’ve developed and honed over the last 11 years after suffering with anxiety and a lack of confidence back in 2000.
